My first JD was a 1960's 4020 LP, purchased, geez, '80's sometime as I recall. Weep holes (on the side of the block) were leaking....knew nothing of the engine nor holes, nor what fluid coming from them when meant when purchased. Well into the overhaul (unexpected event at time of purchase) I found a black oring and an orange one, one on each end of the sleeve.
Upon getting my new parts and instructions, seems the PO(s) or their mechanic/machine shop, installed the rings in the wrong spot. One is made to tolerate water the other petroleum products...forget which went where. Don't remember about pitting. Broke a couple of liners trying to get them out.....had correct tools but just didn't want to come out. OH was an inframe and a local mechanic helping me was moonlighting from a dealership.
