I was really young that day with the bus. I always knew there were people in the world that lived on a scale that was lower than where I grew up. What I learned that day was they were a lot closer to home than I had ever been told. That trailer in a field was less than hour from home. Then I joined the FD and found that people lived in poverty in my city. You enter a house and find a mattress on the floor in the coat closet or next to the flange in what used to be a downstairs toilet...both with sheets and blankets and toys. Honestly, that nice little house is a palace compared to what I have seen over the years.
