Tony, Sounds like the trailer is stout enough.A 6" channel iron frame will handle your load it sounds like. You didn't say what the deck is made of.Most are 2x6 which is just enough. I added a 3/4" plywood reinforcement where my wheels rest to help spread the load. For what you want to do you need brakes on both axles. If the trailer was built by a comercial company it will have a plate on it stating the trailers capacity. Also look at the load rating on the tires. Its molded right into the sidewall of the tire. This rating MUST add up to more than your Gross weight or the nice man at the scale house will keep you there! For your own safety as well as that of the rest of us on the road. Besides its a real chore to change a flat on a fully loaded trailer. $800 would be a good deal on a 10,000# trailer if its safe and legal.
