No. That disconnect has the right idea but is meant for operation right at the diff as well as being FAR outside the price range of the part I'm after. But it is also a partial yes. Even if this was...I'd still need an overhead shaft to get power to the rear axle. SEE BELOW.
Since I'll be pairing up axles never meant for tandem I'll need to mount a low profile disconnect on top of the main drive axle. It will be powered via chain//sprocket at the pinion (hopefully a flange type so I can sandwich everything). Idea is to have 2 separate shafts each supported by 2 bearings. 1 short shaft that is being powered off the pinion while the other goes out the back of the "box" with a U-joint just outside where a drive shaft connects to the rear axle which will be pitched up slightly to lower the joint angles. Inside the box the shafts will be butted up to one another that a collar can slide on...it will ride on 1 of them at all times. Ideally the middle of the box will be sealed and grease-filled so the guts are kept lubed. Either a sliding rod w/ fork will come in from the front of the box or there will be a pivot arm (ie exactly how a clutch release bearing works...except the bearing is inside with the splined collar not out).
