You know Destroked you are supposed to plan your farmstead. I started out in western Maryland where it freezes fairly deep--out as deep as you midwestern guys but deep enough. Learned how to build pole buildings. Now I'm in Virginia and built a couple. I faced them away from the prevailing wind and left the long side open. Worked fine then a weakened hurricane came through and I got worried--talked to the insurance people. Oh Oh no insurance coverage for open sided buildings. So I installed sliding doors--They count as closed building now; the building aren't as handy now is all. The other problem is TERMITES. The poles are set 4 feet in the ground, Fortunately I used old power poles and after 20 years they still seem sound. So here's my suggestions: 1) Protect the building site from the wind with trees or a hill 2) Face the opening away from the prevailing wind direction. 3) If termites are in the area put something other than wood in the ground. Maybe concrete. 4) Brace the building every way so the wind, the animals, and clumsy tractor drivers won't knock it down.

Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
