Timing IS adjustable. four screws to loosen in the vicinity of the point cam lobe (under dist cap) then you can change timing. sounds like you need to retard it. The book says to set TDC (mark on flywheel under a half moon shaped cover on pony transmission above big engine flywheel) then move Hot distributer til a spark appears on #1 plug(right above oil dipstick)then tighten screws This thing fires on every stroke at TDC seems kinda goofy. If you can get her to run, you might be able to set it by ear. ALWAYS motor the diesel on decompression before starting. What a beast!
