You didn't say whether your tractor was positive ground or negative ground. If it is positive ground, when you touch the tractor then the ground it is then positive to negative. But if your tractor is negative ground, then it is negative to negative. In the old days and on the older tractors positive ground tractors and negative ground tractors didn't work too well when you were trying to give them a jump start. The positive tractor would be touching the negative ground tractor and you would create a spark. Rubber tires make a difference as they make an insulator from the ground. By dropping a back blade, chain, or implement, you would be mixing a positive with a negative ground. The best example I can give you is the trouble light. You can plug it in either way, but if you plug it in with the positive connected to the socket and the middle is ground, it still works but if you touch the socket and are well grounded--you'll get a shock. It is one reason why they changed positive ground to a negative ground - and another reason why they changed your outlets to a 3 prong plug. But----if you have a positive ground--forget it as you may have a short.
