Like the others stated, the JD 24V system is a floating ground system that requires a generator/alternator that does not run its output through the generator/alternator frame to ground. It requires a unit with both + and - terminals isolated from the chassis. The Starter and generator/alternator are isolated from any chassis ground. To run 12V accessories the cable that connects the rear post on each 12V battery is grounded to the tractor so you can pick up 12V+ from one starter cable to ground and 12V- from the other starter cable to ground.
