Grandpa, the way to determine if the coil is a 6 volt or 12 volt are as follows:
Use the Ohm Meter function on a meter set to the lowest ohms RESISTANCE range (may be like 20 or 200 etc depends on meter), that's NOT the DC Volts range, and attach the leads to the two small + and - terminals. If it reads in the 1.2 to under 2 ohms range (1.5 typical) ITS A 6 VOLT COIL and if used on a 12 volt tractor you need to add an external series in line voltage dropping (12 down to 6) ballast resistor.
If it reads more like 2.5 to 4 or so ohms (3 typical) ITS A 12 VOLT COIL and no ballast is used on a 12 volt tractor
A coil labeled "12 Volts" or "12 Volts NOT for use with ballast" is likely a full true 12 volt coil no ballast needed
HOWEVER if it says 6 volts or says 12 volts for use with ballast ITS A 6 VOLT COIL
NOTE wire coil at correct polarity
For a NEG ground tractor the coils + receives voltage from ignition switch and - wires to distributor For a POS ground tractor the coils - receives voltage from ignition switch and + wires to distributor

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
