I know lots of people like that, just hard to give up ones dreams.
I didn’t follow the previous discussion but I will guesses:
Bob remembers being 45 and doing stuff and still has all that ambition locked up in his head; the body is much older and the concentration and ambition left a long time ago, and so he is conflicted with his dreams and his reality. But both are very real.
I suspect there is not worry about him actually fixing the pickup or getting it out on the road.
But the dream hasn’t gone away..... if it does, so does any thought of still being somebody, still having value......
