Check the fuel to see if it is getting into the carb bowl.
There is a plug on bottom of the carb bowl. With the engine off, fuel valve open, remove the plug, catch the flow in a clean glass.
It should start out as a full stream, then taper down to a trickle, and continue as a trickle indefinitely. If it slows to a drip, or stops, not enough fuel is making it to the bowl. Could be a restriction in the tank, or the screen inside the carb inlet fitting, or something in the needle valve.
Look at what was caught. If it's cloudy, there is water in the fuel. If rust and grit, the tank is contaminated and needs to be removed and rinsed out with E85.
Whatever is in the glass will also be in the carb. You may need to ease it apart and clean it out. If it's been stored with fuel in the carb, the jets and passages will need to be scraped out, as the ethanol tends to leave residue behind as it evaporates.
Unless the carb is damaged, make every effort to keep it if it's original. A rebuilt carb is better than a new one, as the new ones are generic fit all and not the same quality as the original.
