When I graduated from high school (1964), my English instructor got me a job for her husband, he sold and leased used Fordson Majors, that he brought in from England. He was the original Ford tractor dealer in the county, and separated from them in a dispute. We would clean up the Majors, put a Howard rotovator gearbox in them, and sell or lease them for pulling green pea combines. We had a lease fleet of about 60. When the thousand series came out, he started bringing in the 5000 and 3000, in competition with the local dealer. The British models had the headlights in the grille, a hand brake, and turn signals, US models didn't. He wouldn't import the 4000, saying he thought it was a waste of iron. If I remember correctly, he sold a new 5000, with dual remotes for $3950, and a two year, unlimited warranty. At first, we couldn't get power steering models. He sold a couple to farmers in Utah, told them that if they didn't like them, when we could get power steering, he would take care of them. A year later, we got several with power steering. He jacked two up, pulled the front castings and steering, steering boxes, and lines, loaded them in the back of our Ford Ranchero, and our other mechanic and I went to Utah. The first one was South of Salt Lake City, We got there at about 3pm, the farmer put us in an old garage with no power, and a barrel stove. We pulled the headlights off and hung them from the cross beams with baling wire, finished about about 8pm. Spent the night in SLC and went to Roosevelt the next morning, got there in late afternoon, and changed out the second one. Spent the night in Roosevelt, and headed for Ogden. It started snowing, and we didn't want to stop to eat, so we stopped at a store got a loaf of bread, some bologna and some milk, and away we went. We were going through some beautiful country, meeting no traffic at all,got out of the mountains, stopped for gas,and the attendant asked where we were coming from, we said Roosevelt, and he said, "They closed that road two hours ago because of the snow." Oh, to be young and stupid again.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
