The I & T shop manuals that I have would give enough information for a person to overhaul and engine. Clearances and tolerances and torque values are given in the I&T manuals. To use the shop manual you will need a basic knowledge of how things work and go together, there are diagrams that show exploded views. I think you will find that the shop manual will suffice. Paying $300 for a service manual will cover a good chunk of labor to have someone else do it. I believe the service manual goes through every aspect of the machine in detail - transmission, rearend, PTO, etc. So if you have a fairly decent working knowledge of an engine the shop manual will work.
