Skunks dig little one inch "divots" in my yard, looking for grubs. I just leave the divots alone as they do no real harm to the turf and they deteriorate in a couple weeks. Skunks are excellent "mousers" so that is a big benefit to have them around. They are also a very good looking animal and, if not for the smell, they really do no harm.
If you walk outside and calmly get their attention, they will slowly walk away.
I am not a notorious animal lover, but on balance I see no reason to kill them unless they show symptoms of rabies. They are a clean animal compared to raccoons.
I live-trapped them years ago, but now I do not see them as a threat. Live-trapping certainly is exciting but I had a good method and never got sprayed. LA in WI
