Could be weak spark. Check spark at the plugs when it's acting up. It should be able to jump 1/4" minimum from each plug wire to ground. Check the point gap, distributor shaft for side play. Feel the coil, it should not be noticeably hotter than the surrounding metal.
Could be fuel starvation. Try loosening the cap. Check the fuel flow through the carb. With the engine off, fuel valve on, have a clean glass ready to catch the flow. Remove the carb drain plug, watch the flow. It should have a full stream, then slow to a trickle. If it stops or slows to a drip, there is a restriction. Could be in the tank, the sediment screen, the screen in the fuel inlet elbow of the carb. If any inline filters have been added, they could be restricting the flow.
Look at what was caught. If cloudy or water in the bottom, dirt, rust, the tank is contaminated and needs to be taken off and rinsed with E85.
Whatever is in the glass will also be in the carb. It may need to have the bowl eased off and cleaned.
Could be vapor lock. Be sure the fuel line is routed away from the exhaust.
