Three days ago I sprayed about three acres of brome grass with a 50/50 mix of 32% and water. I was shooting for about 20 GPA of actual 32% or somewhere in the 60 pound actual nitrogen per acre range. I ended up putting on maybe 100 pounds, it was a very uncalibrated job. Right after I sprayed it we had .45" of rain and this morning we had another quarter inch so it is worked into the soil by now and washed off the leaves. The brome grass is 8" tall, maybe a little taller and about 15%-20% of the leaves are burned.
I know the brome grass will come out of it just fine I am not worried about the damage. What concerns me is the quality of the hay. In the back of my mind I think I read once that a heavy nitrogen application will make the hay toxic but I might be imagining that. What do you guys think? This is for my granddaughter s horses and I sure do not want to make them sick.
