I have a 93 Dodge 3/4ton with a cummins that just turned over 250,000 miles, and it's still in very good condition, uses no oil and gets 22mpg highway and 20 in town. I haven't gotten less than 14.5 towing, that varies depending trailer weight. Its the best vehicle that I have ever owned. My Ford gas trucks are for sale, 8 to 12mpg and always something to repair on them. Stock 460's and 454's won't come close to the cummins performance wise. The Ford powerstrokes are very good power wise, mileage isn't quite as good, and I don't know if they will last as long yet, I have some friends with them but they only have around 100k on them.
