If everything goes dead, good chance the problem is a poor battery connection.
Check the connection at the ground strap to the sheetmetal by the battery. A common fix is to go with a longer cable connected directly to the engine block.
When checking with a volt meter or test light, check with the circuit under load, as in while holding the starter button. A weak connection will often return to normal once the load is removed, that's why it needs to be tested under load.
I prefer a test light over a volt meter for chasing bad connections. The light is easier to see, not as sensitive as a meter.
Just be absolutely sure it is in neutral and stay clear of moving parts, it could try to crank any time!
