I stopped by the local garage one morning after Sunday School. I was a freshman in high school, and one of the local boys was under a '57 Plymouth with a cutting torch trying to install a homemade "dump tube" on the exhaust. We made dump tubes out of pipe fittings in the high school shop and were convinced that they made a car run faster. (Noise equals speed). I was sitting on a block of wood watching the sparks fly from under the old Plymouth when something banged real loud and the Plymouth took a nose dive. Gopher had cut the torson bar in two, and he was trapped under the car. I grabbed the front fender and lifted the car up enough for him to squirt out from under it. Both sides of his head were skinned up, but his behavior seemed normal (not good, but normal). We jacked it up and inserted a chunk of 2X4 under the frame to make is sit kinda level. It sure didn't make it ride any better. By the way - I mentioned the Sunday School on purpose - if I hadn't had on good clothes I'd have been under there with him and we'd have both been trapped. I didn't know what a torson bar was back then either.
