The MF 165 has Power assist mechanical linkage to operate the cylinder spool valve. Most poor steering is caused by the worn link ends and pins that connect to the spool valve. When they are worn the spool valve no longer moves in/out as needed to turn on the power assist oil into the cylinder. I'd replace the linkage ends and pins first. The pump can is where it should be, and some models just have an inlet screen, no filter. There are early and late models, steering works similar but some parts are different so be careful ordering linkage parts.
