He explained to me just how he got it off the stand to take off.At a certain RPM the outside of the tire wold expand from centrifugal force,and contact the ground.I thought he was kicking it off the stand,but then again I never saw him actually do that.He said he could never kick it off the stand fast enough.The first run I saw him make there was 156 MPH.Then he came down the return lane,helmet off,no hands on the bars,and the guy in the timing shack held the timing slip out the window for him to snatch up as he went by.(No clutch)I used to live right next to New England Dragway,back then the neighbors could wander around the place for free.I remember seeing the first rail breaking 200 MPH there too.It may have been Don Gartlits,but I'm not sure on that.
