They have "cam phaser solenoid" issues, cam phaser issues, and the camshafts run in unbushed journals in the cylinder head, when they wear a bit (a P.O. not changing oil frequently enough makes it happen faster) oil pressure controlled by the 'puter leaks away instead of passing through the hollow camshaft to make the cam phasers do their thing.
"Having the timing chains done" by a shop (you didn't say you were going to do this yourself) would more than double your cash outlay for this vehicle plus not address the other issues I mentioned.
The fix is "remanned" or new cylinder heads, but by the time you buy them and pay shop labor to install them, you are at the price of a "new" engine.
I don't think buying/taking over the misery on this vehicle will provide you with a "tractor hauler" at a bargain price. Just MHO!
