: : : I am preparing to buy my first tractor to use on my 5 acre (flat) farm. I am not very mechanical so do not want a project requiring work. A 20 HP compact tractor seems like what I need. I am looking at a 10 year old Kubota L245DT 25 HP drive with 560 hours in good condition for $11,900 and a new JD 4100 20hp for 13,750. Both are 4 wheel drive with mechanical transmission and come with loaders. : : : Which of these seems like a better value? What else should I be considering? Both of these are being sold by local dealers. Do tractor dealers negociate on price or should I expect to pay "sticker price"? : : : Thanks for any help that you can provide. : : Steve, I wouldn't buy either of them. The old Kubotas (pre 1993) started hard and were not very consumer friendly to use. Do Not Buy The New John Deeres!!!!!!! They are very cheaply made and constructed. I was informed that DEERE voided the warrenty on the tractor if you installed a 3-point mounted backhoe on it. If you wanted a very good tractor worth the money, buy a new Kubota, like a B-2400 HST. You will be happy. Ps... do not let the Kubota dealer talk you into a B2150 tractor. They are a pain in the a--!!!! If you get a mower deck on it, it doesn't lift off of the ground high enough in transport position. -------Lee Forbush, assembly man at a Kubota Dealer and friend to the hard working consumer.
