The 80's were a time of over valued land $3'000 plus and the high interest which caught so many off guard with variable rate loans. Once the sell out of the farming community began there were no more buyers for livestock or equipment. This triggered the lending institutions into panic. They turned the whole country side into a panic sale much like the stock market of '29. Farmers whom had never missed a payment were then forced into sale because of their devalued land, eqipment and livestock.
We lost the american family farm then. It became evident that only through corporate protections that farming would ever be a reasonable risk. Those of us who continue to try know what can happen, we just aren't willing to give our heritage up without a fight. Corporate farming is failing as well. As you look down the list posted by the EWG.com you will see many of the same names at the top of the list that you will see on the sale bills.
In case any of you are wondering where all this federal aid to farmers is going. Check out the list for your area and see how few collect so much.
