I grew up in Sheboygan County WI in the Kettle Morane. We had rocks. There was eight of us kids and spring time was constant picking rocks after school and weekends. It seemed like the actual tillage and planting was a non-event. The real event was picking rocks. We had an eighteen foot hay rack with side 2x4's. We picked by hand, strong back, or fork and then shoveled, picked, and lifted them off at the rock pile.
When I was very young my Dad was always blasting rocks and stumps. I was the oldest. We had dynamite and blasting caps in the garage. I was often sequestered to the house for the main event. I still remember that.
Some of my brothers and sisters are still bitter over the rock picking experience. Ya, it was pretty intense and lasted a long time.
I now live in La Crosse County in WI. Some farmers complain about rocks. I roll my eyes and tell them they got nothing.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
