The wire from the coil to the distributor will not produce a high voltage spark. It will make a modest spark if rubbed against a ground when disconnected from the side of the distributor, and with the ignition turned on for the teat. holding it 1/8" away will do nothing. The points are a intermittent switch timed to the engine rotation. They provide a ground for the coil when closed. When they open, the coil magnetism collapses and creates high voltage from the center coil wire through the rotor and cap to the specific plug needing a spark. If you use a test light on the system, with all wires in place, ground the test light wire, and put the probe on the connection at the side of the distributor. Crank it with the ignition on. The light should flash. If it stays on the points are not working or disconnected inside. If it never comes on, the points are grounded or not opening. Jim
