This isn’t a fix for your problem but, if you are sitting on the tractor, with your foot on the clutch, and the tractor in gear before you start it, does the clutch fully disengage the transmission, or will the tractor creep forward as the starter turns the engine over? I’d say if it creeps forward, it is time to split the tractor and do the clutch. If it doesn’t creep forward, starts and runs fine, and you can shift to other gears while the engine is running, I’d say live with it till you have time or money to allow you to tear into this tractor. Too me , it sounds like components of the clutch are worn, and complete clutch failure could be just around the corner. Grinding of gears while clutch is depressed is often the throw out bearing, and can also be the fingers on the pressure plate assembly were the bearing makes contact. Only way to know is by taking it apart. Our old 35 Cockshutt would eat a throw out bearing every three years when dad used it on his AC Roto Baler. Not a hard job to change. Just my thoughts.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
