I would hardly call a 454 a car motor, although I know they did put them in cars. I had a 454 in a hd.3/4 Chev crewcab. I put over 150,000 miles on it ,a half of that was pulling a tri/axle flat deck load up or my fifth wheel camper. I parked it when the tranny finally gave out but the engine still runs fine. They have the same size brgs on the crank as a 366/427 but have much larger valves etc. and so are capable of much more hp. I rebuilt and installed a 427 with a quadra-Jet carb, into a one ton of a friend of mine. He has a four speed standard. My crew cab would leave him in the dust pulling equal loads. They are the same block just milled different, with different heads, and drilled for 7/16 bolts instead of 3/8s. You can bolt a 454 water pump onto a 427 just by drilling out the bolt holes in the pump. The 454 exhaust manifolds bolt right on to a 427. 366/427 intake is designed for more coolant flow for the Medium Duty application plus they won't put out near the hp. of the 454 so they last longer. I agree that if you drive a 454 on the rug all the time it would have a relative short life. That's why a 366 is so tough, because it puts out so much less hp. on the same size brgs. etc.The distibutor out of a 454, also works in a 427 makes it sound like a 350 or 454 idling. Need I say more!!

Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
