A-C Crawler

I may be aquiring an Allis Chalmers crawler tractor. The people who currently have it believe it is of early 1940's vintage. It has a gasoline engine. It is not very big-maybe 2 or 3 ton. I have looked around on it, but have yet to find the serial and model numbers. Does anyone know where to look? Are the numbers engraved right in, or was it a plate that was attached. If it was a plate, how will I be able to find out the above information if it is missing?
