Grandpap and dad built their homebrewed garden tractor (they call it "George") out of a 11hp, ex-Army, 2-cylinder Wisconsin (civilian ones were all about 18hp, go figure), mated to a VW clutch, a Chevy toploader 4 speed, and a cut down Chrysler 8-3/4" with 3.9 gears. Hydraulics for the floating drawbar, and the snowblade lift came from a ex Chrysler power steering pump. It had a Jeep manual steering box, and a regular cast front axle (Cub Cadet I think) The frame was 2"x 4" box, and all the body panels were 1/4" plate. It easily pulled one 14" plow, cultivated corn and pushed snow. They also entered it in a couple garden tractor pulls, entered as either 11 or 18 HP it would win, but it was usually too heavy (at 2300lbs) to pull by weight ;) As far as commercial conversions, There was a company using a Dodge set up back in the 40s and 50s for golf courses. Earlier than that Mongomery Ward and the other big catalog sales houses sold kits to change over your worn out Model T, Model A Chevy or Buick

I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
