Another possibility are worn,sticky injectors,they can make an oily mess & still start fairly well. The unburned fuel mixed with soot looks like "oil". Fortunately the injectors are easy to remove for service. Always get new tips instead of re-using old ones. New copper gaskets are required between the injector & head as well. Make sure the old one(s) are removed. As previously stated the three manuals are vital & will pay for them selves many times over.
