Johns comments about a bad ground are worth a look. Does the battery ground cable go to the engine block? If not check the condition of the engine to chassis ground strap. also if the alternator output wire has a bad connection or intermittent open connection between the alternator and battery it will force the alternator to put out much more than normal 14.2 volts and over voltage makes them heat up. Also a poor ground at the regulator or a bad regulator will cause unregulated output from the alternator, altho this usually shows itself as an overcooked battery and too bright and burned out lights. A bad connection in the sense wire at the regulator can do the same thing. all things to check before bolting on that new alternator.
