I bought a 970 J.D. that had not been run for 3 yrs. and when I got it started it blew black smoke and the engine would not rev. up or slow down with the throttle lever, the fuel injector had to be taken off and carried to a shop that has equipment to put it on a test stand and get computer read-outs to adjust each cylinder, the shop foreman told me that diesel fuel contained sulphur and it dries out and leaves the powder residue in the injector, also when it is removed ,make you some timing marks if you cannot find any because it is like a distributor or magneto as far as timing is concerned. this was a yanmar engine but our problems appear to be the same. good luck
