No matter what anybody says, the internal combustion engine powered vehicle is still the gold standard to which all challengers are compared.
The hard line folks that insist that electric is the future will not give up no matter how dirty or damaging electric will be to the environment. Every form of energy production results in environmental effects. Some are worse than others, but they all have an effect.
It seems to me that the vehicles of the future should look more towards locomotive technology for the best compromise solution. Consider: an engine driving a generator that powers everything in the vehicle. Traction motors at each wheel. A true 4-wheel drive vehicle without a transmission, transfer case, or any other complicated mechanical devices. No heavy batteries to contend with or to pollute the earth with their toxic chemicals. The weight savings alone would make it a more efficient vehicle. Add to that dynamic braking that would reduce the amount of dust particles emitted to the atmosphere.
