To actually answer the question you asked....use a spinning rod to toss a weight over a limb. Use that to pull a light cord over it, then use the cord to winch up your rope. Put a loop in one end of the rope, pass the other end through to loop, making sure the TRUNK of the tree is inside the resulting hitch. The higher you place the rope, the less strain you have to put on the rope, but if the tree has been dead for a while, the top might not be strong enough. You'll just have to use your judgement, there. Your rope, obviously must be twice as long as the height of your tie-off spot, but should be twice the height of the whole tree. I have a 300' piece of 5/8 nylon left from my off-shore fishing days, that I use for this. I like the "stretch factor" in the nylon, because I can put a little pressure on the tree by locking the brakes on my truck. If you use a stretchy rope, be sure to pull it tight before you start cutting. Good luck, and BE CAREFUL!
