Even if the cap says it's vented, it may be stuck or clogged.
Also make sure the fuel line is routed as far from the exhaust as practical.
Might want to take a look at the ignition system too. Hard to say without being there to see what's happening, but it is normal for an updraft to drip gas following a failed start.
If the spark is too weak to fire, which can happen if the coil is heating up, or the starter is dragging, taking too many amps away from the ignition, either can result in poor hot starting.
