Most towns and cities around here are along the rivers, and they draw water either directly from the river, or have wells located in the flood plain and are drawing water filtered by a few feet of dirt right next to the river. Basically, river water.
Then they treat the water all different ways with chemicals and filters to make it drinkable. Add chlorine to cover up any mistakes.
You can’t dig a new shallow well in my county, you need to go some depth to get a certificate. You find water at 200 feet, to 400 feet here. You are punching through 150 of very tight yellow and blue clay to get there.
This well Water it pretty high in iron and magnesium, but is quite pure and clean and has nothing nasty in it. Here.
I’d rather have the well water than the heavily treated river water from the city. Here.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
