I recall one conversation I had with a gal at a Dodge dealership about a Dodge B100 van with a 318ci V8 engine.
After the preliminaries, I asked her the problem. She said an injector failed.
Me: "OK, you need an injector"?
She: "No, we need a complete new engine. We figured a price of $3948.00".
Me: "Why do we need a complete new engine"?
She: "Well, the technician said when the injector failed, it ran rich and when that happens it burns the cylinder out and all you can do is replace the entire engine".
I had to mute my telephone 'til I quit laughing. I then told her she needed to get the vehicle owner's permission to pull the cylinder head on that bank. I told her when they had the cylinder head off, to call me and I would send an inspector to check out the damage. Of course, I never heard from them again.
The sorry part was, a failed injector would have been covered on the contract. The only way out for the dealership to have kept from eating the price of the injector would have been for them to convince the vehicle owner that an injector was NOT covered.
This was everyday stuff. Day after day, we saw shops succumb to greed and outsmart themselves. What this service department obviously intended was to replace the injector and then bill us for a complete engine.
Like I said, I could write a book, and I may, someday.
