Yes, a U-joint can cause this but generally it has to be out a long time and vibration fatigues the week areas. I did see something similar happen on what I believe was an 82 model Chevy 3/4 ton with a 4 speed I think it was one of the first years using the 205 aluminum case. This was at the place I worked as a mechanic right out of high school. One of our main clients was maintaining vehicles for the railroad. This truck belonged to the railroad communications and radio dept. They had a mico brake lock installed to hold the truck while they would spool off wire from a trailer hooked to it. I don’t remember if the mico lock got set by accident or on purpose but a rookie got in to move it. Well this guy was smart on electronics but not mechanical things. He tried to move the truck...well let’s just say the rpms must have reached the trees when he dumped the clutch when it didn’t move at first. It came in our shop on a wrecker u joints broke in both the front and rear drive shafts and I believe both halves of the transfer case busted. Got that all fixed up and sure enough in a couple weeks it was back in for a noise that had developed in the rear axle. Popped the cover and sure enough the incident had also fractured a tooth on the ring gear.

After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
