Snake would be a rental item my area. I agree no reason to keep one around unless you're going into the business. I like the idea of cutting the pipe and putting in a cleanout. Plastic pipe? Cast iron? Something else? I hope it's plastic. Plumbing pro (and there are plenty here) can give you an idea of where to put the cleanout, but once you cut the pipe you can probably unclog it.
Do you think the "fall" of the pipe is adequate? Does it look like it's going downhill slightly? This is from a quick search:

It's good you have access to it in the basement--that makes the job MUCH easier. I was imagining a crawl space which is hellish.
