Generators could not be replaced by alternators untill high amperage diodes small enough to fit inside the alternator case were developed(about 59 or 60).Untill then the only way to convert a generator's normal AC output to DC for charging batteries was to use the spinning commutator and brushes of a generator. I once owned what I call the missing link between generators and modern alternators. I had a 58 Ford truck that was equipped with a rotating field,3 PH generator that instead of having internal diodes to convert AC to DC, had a large plate type rectifier mounted in front of the radiator for air cooling. It had 3 wires carrying AC from the generator to the rectifier, and 1 heavy DC wire from the rectifier to the battery. aparently button diodes were not avalible yet so this 2 piece rig with external rectifier was necessary.

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
