If the studs are broken off it is easier (for me) to just take the head off. The location of the frame rail makes it hard to get a drill in there without jacking on the motor anyway.
But then again I worked for a place that had a fleet of those trucks. Since it was the only thing I worked on day in and day out I knew that engine compartment like the back of my hand.
