That rattle/knock sound is high pressure/speed shock waves hitting the combustion chamber hard enough to hear the sound above everything else. Ether will strip the lube oil off the cylinder walls & score the bore/rings. If the detonation doesn't break rings, crack piston lands or pound rod/crank bearings flat first. As previously mentioned, preheat the engine no matter it be gas/diesel even if it starts without the preheating. The reduced strain on the starting system, less washdown with raw fuel & increased efficiency & engine life will result. It's as important to heat the batteries with a battery blanket or tray as the engine. Lead/acid battery power & charging efficincy drops to 40% capacity at 0F. Does this poor abused engine have an oilbath aircleaner? Ether will be absorbed by the oil until saturated before enough gets to the engine to assist starting.Then the engine is further beaten with ether as it evaporates from the breather oil when the engine starts.
