Been startin diesels with a propane torch since B model Macks. Light the torch, stick it in the air intake, and warm things up, then spin the engine. Usually the flame sucks out and the torch delivers propane, works much better thanether. I have 1 cold blooded Yanmar that I always start this way when it's below 20 degrees. Never seen a ring busted this way, but I sure have seen lots of busted rings from ether.
