Like the others said a block heater or a lower radiator hose heater can make a world of difference to a diesel in the winter. It'll also help get the oil a little warmer and that is a good thing. When I took my GM 71 series overhaul course at the regional GM dealer place many moons ago the instructor said that "a little" ether doesn't hurt anything. I've seen 6-71's that ran their fuel racks dry in the summer that just did not want to start unless they had a whiff. But a whole can is not "a little." The throttle position shouldn't make a big difference. I would guess 1/3 to half open would be about right.
