Good Morning Gentlemen, we have a John Deere Gator 825i that has become increasingly hard to shift. If you shut the machine down, you can cycle through the gears just fine. As soon as you start it up it is difficult if not impossible to get from forward to reverse. We pulled the plastic cover off that covers the clutches and it seems as though the primary clutch is not fully releasing. It seems to keep tension on the drive belt which in turn keeps everything in a bind. If you remove the drive belt and throttle up the engine, the clutch will move in steps, not continuously like I would have imagined. Once the engine idles back down, and you shut the gator off, you can grab the clutch face and compress it back about that last 1/8" to fully disengage it. Why the clutch won't do this on its own I don't know. I googled around trying to find a tech manual or service guide but didn't really have any luck. All the other online forums acknowledge these clutches are a problem, but don't address how to fix it on your own.
Do any of you have any experience with these clutches?

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
