Picture this. A worn out JD 720 narrow front, bad brakes, clutch hard to disengage. I'm pulling a disc and getting ready to turn at the end of the field. I hit the lift lever, crank the wheel hard to the left, and stand with all my weight on the left brake pedal. The front wheels are digging a furrow in the soft ground. A quick glance behind me shows the disc isn't lifting. One of the hydraulic hoses has come unhooked. I'm heading toward the bar ditch at about a 45 degree angle. This ditch has about a 3 foot drop straight down on the field side. I yank frantically on the clutch lever 2 or 3 times before it finally releases. By then the front wheels are going over the edge of the ditch. I hit the kill switch and bail off. I land in the ditch and look up to see the tractor leaning over where I'm lying. Fortunately, it didn't turn over. After a few minutes of wondering what to do next, I climb back on it, put it in 1st and ease it up onto the road. Then I reconnected the hydraulic hose and went back to work. I was 16 years old at the time. I think it scares me more now than it did then, although I was plenty scared at the time.
