When I was about 12, I was pulling a mower behind a 8n Ford, mowing along a road. The tractor slipped sideways over the bank, and started to tip. I got it shut off, and sat on the left rear tire to keep it from rolling over until a neighbor happed along and went and got his M Farmall to pull me out. I never told my dad. When I was about 14,I took the 8N up in the woods to look for a calf that had just been born. I went up a hill, turned around, and while comming down the hill, the tractor came out of gear. I couldn't get it back into gear, and the rear wheels just slid with the brakes on, so I aimed for a dead birch tree. It wasn't so dead. It stopped me, but smashed up the front of the tractor. My Dad made me pay for the repairs. Then about 10 year later, he was on the same 8N, comming down a hill with a trailer load of firewood. The tractor came out of gear again, and went out of control. The trailer jacked knifed, and rolled the tractor over. My Dad was pinned underneath, with gas running all over him. The engine stopped. Neighbors got him out, but he died a few days later. I rebuilt the tractor. I was skidding a log out of the woods with it when I went over a small rise, and the log behind me dropped into a depression. The weight pulled the front of the tractor up off the ground, and it didn't stop going up. I put in the clutch, but It still didn't go back down. I didn't have time the drop the 3 Point hitch, it all happened in about 10 seconds. When the tractor was straight up and down, and starting over backwards, I kicked my legs out, and swung over to the side. The tractor landed upside down right along side of me. My Mother saw it all happen. She just screamed and screamed. Then, about 5 year ago, on the same 8N, I was mowing brush in the pasture. The left rear tire hit a small 3" elm tree, and the tractor spun to the left, and the rear axle ended up straddling the tree and pushed it forward onto my left foot which was on the clutch when I was trying to stop. So there I sat. My foot was on the clutch being crushed by the tree, and so the tractor couldn't move. I tried whittling the tree with my pocket knife, but it was an awkward position, and I dropped the Knife. I could look out over the valley, and see several houses about 1/4 mile away. So I'd yell "HELP" evey now and then. Finally, a woman heard the yelling, but couldn't tell where it was comming from. She got another lady, and they drove around, stopping and listening, unil the figured out where I was. They got the same neighbor farmer, and he came up the hill with his M farmall, and a chainsaw, and cut me out. I had a badly brused foot, but recovered in a few days. I still have that damn 8n ford!

Upgrading an Oliver Super 55 Electrical System - by Dennis Hawkins. My old Oliver Super 55 has been just sitting and rusting for several years now. I really hate to see a good tractor being treated that way, but not being able to start it without a 30 minute point filing ritual every time contributed to its demise. If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
