First of all, You should check the point setting with a dwell meter -much more accurate than trying to set them with a feeler guage. Point setting affects timing. The narrower the points are set the more the timing is delayed, so there is no use in checking the timing until you know the points are exactly where they should be. The best way to set the timing (in my opinion) is when the engine is under heavy load-hooked up to a dyno is ideal. Where ever it has the most power (and it will run the coolest) is where the timing should be -regardless of what "The Book" says!! Why--Because Book specs. are based on a particular fuel grade at a particular altitude and the higher the fuel grade the slower it burns, therefore requiring more advanced timing, plus fuels have changed over the years.
