Cross the chains and keep them as tight as possible. If they are crossed they won't tighten in a turn so they can be pretty tight. Keep your cord as long as possible so it won't come unplugged if the trailer comes unhooked. Keep the break away just longer than the chains. That way as long as the chains hold you have brakes through the vehicle and if they fail you lock the brakes.
